The library was constructed in 2009 and is a valuable resource for the school. The library has books donated from a multitude of sources and has dictionaries and thesauruses, a precious commodity in rural Malawi. The learners have lessons in the library including IT with 4 donated laptops, and in 2016 Expand undertook a Literacy Boost project.

Evans ___ is our librarian at Chisala and has been working at the school since 2015. Evans was trained in Mzuzu Library and also teaches the children computer skills. The library also has a TV and DSTV to show films and sports events for fundraising.

Every year Expand donates around GBP 1,000 towards maintenance and the School Management Committee, comprised of community members, decides what needs to be done. Expand pays for the salary of an Expand Project Manager, a watchman, and a librarian.

From 2016 - 2022:

  • Expand has replaced the batteries in the library which links to the solar system. The community uses this an electrical hub for charging phones, watching sporting events and connecting to the internet.

  • We have funded the librarian to continue their work with the Literary Boost Scheme.
